So you can't fall asleep?

So you cant fall asleep at night? When you lay there on your bed you become worried and frustated. Rolling around to each side of the bed but you just can't fall asleep.

We all had nights when it just seems impossible to fall asleep, but the scary thing is that it happens to so many people so many times.

The problem is when people lay down at night their mind starts to get into a overthinking state, they think about all kinds of problems and situations in their lifes or in the future or what they're going to do tomorow. Sometimes they're not even thinking about a negative thought but probably excited about something and they can't fall asleep.

Like Christmas when we were younger? or imagining winning the lottery and claiming it the next day? there are so many positive and negative reasons why people and you can't fall asleep but lets talk about the negatives thoughts and how you can make yourself fall asleep at night.

First of all lets get this said, don't take sleeping pills, their are so many ways which can help you get to sleep, and taking sleeping pills will need to be the last thing you think about.

Main problems and Solutions:

Jobs- Lots of people don't just have one job but they have 2 or 3 because they just are not earning enough to make a living with one job. Thats the problem there is no time for sleep, all of the jobs are filling up your 24 hours each day.

Probably working first from 6-11am then 12-4pm then 5-11pm meaning you only have a maximum of 6-7 hours if your lucky, but there are other things you need to do aswell during the day right?

I would suggest getting job/carrer advice or cutting down your expenditure if your jobs are causing you not to get enough sleep.

Internet- Across all age groups, internet has become a popular automatic task to to access everyday. So many of us get distracted with the things on the internet e.g socialising, watching videos, working, searching.

The time we put into these things can make us forget to go bed at a decent hour and get some sleep. Keep control of your time, manage it. Seperate the things you need to actually do on the internet from the things you want to do on the internet.

The internet isn't going to go anywhere is always going to be there. "Experts say one of the most alluring sleep distractions is the 24-hour accessibility of the internet"

Video Games- This one is mostly aimed at children, teens and young adults. These people playing video games, sitting down all the time, not moving a single muscle can make them restless because they haven't done much apart from playing.

Also the actual video games can act like caffeine and will energise and excite gamers, causing difficulties falling asleep. If your a parent, dont let your child play video games several hours before their bed time.

But the same goes with video games, they are always going to be there don't give up your time for these things if it involves missing sleep because eventually your brain and body is going to identify this and do something you wont like e.g. low concentration levels, depression, stress, anxiety, fear, low energy.

Smoking- Research has shown that smokers brains make the the smoker awake 11-20 times a night, as your body is lacking nicotine. Some smokers even get up during the night to have a smoke, which brakes your sleeping pattern.

We all know that smoking is bad for your health. Of course I would suggest quiting, your life would be longer, more pleasurable and body vastly healthier.

I know it is easier said then done but if smoking is affecting your sleep or causing any other problems then you know you must quit for your own good, get advice. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Stress- This is a really popular issue amongst us. Their are so many stressful things in life that make us stressed but its how people handle these things that make the situations less stressful. If your getting stressed about a health issue,school/work issue, future, family, friends etc.

Trust me you are NOT alone. Just relax and deal with a problem when it arrives instead of thinking about a problem before it even happened, your making things worse for yourself.

We sleep to recover and relax our bodies, if your getting stressed think about how tired you would be in the morning because you were stressed all night, maybe that will help you fall asleep.

Relax...Count sheep, Count to 100 in your head, breath in through your noise and out through your mouth, listen to some relaxing music that help you get to sleep.

If all these options I suggest don't seem to work then contact a medical doctor/therapist anyone that will know a lot about sleeping. All the stressfull problems you encounter, just remember someone has it worse than you out there and there are still good things in life to appreciate.

Poor Diet- A healthy meal is vital aswell as exercise. They definitely help you fall asleep. Try going out for a jog or workout at home and eat some fruit and vegetables before you go to sleep, it will help.

Lots of people don't eat their 5-a-day and just stick to fat and sugary foods. Those foods have tonnes of energy so obviously your not going to fall asleep if you eat those right before you go to bed.

Have a healthy diet, exercise. I'm not talking about becoming some athletic just so you can fall asleep. Try some things, they might help you.

Did you know?

  • When we sleep our brains produce Serotonin thought to be a contributor to feelings of well-being and happiness.
  • Adults need an average of 7-8 hours of sleep per day but teens need 9-10 hours.
  • There is not a single moment were we are not dreamless.
  • The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes.
  • No one really knows why we dream.
  • Humans sleep on average around three hours less than other primates like chimps, rhesus monkeys, squirrel monkeys and baboons, all of whom sleep for 10 hours.
